Other common names- Fire Dragon plant.
Origin- Pacific Islands, Malaya and New Guinea.
Description- Also called the Beefsteak plant, this spectacular specimen has attractive pointed,serrated leaves - variegated in pink and red rather like coleus. Many many different coloured varieties can be found. The plant can grow to 3 metres high.
Position- These plants thrive with warmth, humidity and plenty of filtered light. They survive in temperatures down to 7 degrees and can be grown successfuly outdoors in coastal gardens and they flourish with water nearby.
Stumpy's Cultivation Tips- Plant several spring or summer cuttings in a pot of rich potting mix and feed regularly with a houseplant fertilizer. In late winter prune back to about 25cm high, to stimulate bushy and healthy growth.
Stumpy's extra tips- Use plenty of water in summer when the plant is growing vigorously. Move to a warmer position at the start of winter to prolong growth and keep humidity high by placing some water nearby.
Problems: Red Spider Mite. Spray with White oil or Pyrethrum to control the problem. Remember to also spray under the leaves.
