Echeveria Harmsii & Species

Echeveria Harmsii - Echeveria species

Origin- Mexico

Description- Echeverias make decorative and undemanding potted plants, hailing as they do from arid regions. They form rosettes which can be regular and symmetrical or more free form as in E.meridian. Leaves are fleshy and may be grey, blue or green, but Harmsii is mostly a green blue tint.

Heights vary according to species. In spring and summer arching stems of small red and orange bell flowers appear.

Position- Plants need a bright sunny position and actually love full sun. They will grow perfectly on a sunny windowsill, or an outdoor balcony is ideal. Hardy down to 5 degrees celcius.

Echeveria plant care

1. Water plants from the base.

2. Keep water away from leaves during watering, rinse leave occasionally to keep them clean.

3. Place pebbles and stones below the plant to reflect light and store heat in the cold period for extra growth stimulation.

4. Give the plants plenty of breathing space and air circulation.

5. Feed with a liquid fertilizer once a fortnight and about once every two months in the winter period. Warmer climates can fertilize more regularly in winter.

Stumpy's Cultivation Tips- Plant seeds in Autumn, cuttings in spring in a potting mix of equal parts of sand and compost. Most good potting mixes will do. Collect leaves after they fall off and let them dry for two days. Then place them on the soil, these plants are extremely tough and will throw new roots to form a baby plant.(God Luv'em)

Feed occasionally in spring and summer. Water the potting mix and try not to wet the foliage. In the summer water every second day and in winter sparingly. These plants need very good drainage and do not like to have wet roots for long periods.

Problems- Mealy bugs and root rot. Spray Mealy bugs with Pyrethrum. The rosette should be tight; loose growth is probably caused by insufficient light. Shrivelling leaves may result from a lack of water
