Fountain Garden Stone Water

Welcome to Fountain Garden Stone Water.

There are thousands of styles of fountains out there. Some are designed and built from scratch by enthusiasts, others bought from retail and wholesale outlets. Fashions come into being and fade out – though some seem to go on forever. Today, stone variations are the vogue. Well, often they appear to be stone but in reality are made of concrete, utilizing a stone oxide to create a “natural” stone appearance. This oxide stains the concrete and gives these pseudo stone fountains that appealing rocky texture that so many of us love. The fact of the matter is that concrete ages well, and because the oxide is mixed thoroughly through the concrete, we have a stone fountain that will stand us in good stead for a very long time. By the way, one way to speed up the “aging process,” as far as looks are concerned, is to pour some old milk and yoghurt over the fountain or stone water statue. It works a treat.

Another Fountain Garden feature is the Outdoor Bamboo Water Fountain. The Japanese love to use bamboo in their garden, and some of these bamboo fountains work on an action that, as the bamboo fills up, it becomes top-heavy, flips - and the water pours out. Originally, these were invented to scare away foraging wildlife such as deer and birds. As this type of waterfall “fills and spills,” the regular sound of the motion becomes almost musical, and the hollow Bamboo resonates with an almost magically spiritual sound. Truly beautiful.

Many of these fountains spill onto a flat stone that represents Feng Shui’s Metal Element. In Japan, Feng Shui rules, and most designs seem to be built to represent or enhance in some way, one or more of the Five Elements. The Feng Shui fountain usually consists of a natural-looking water stone that has already been worn by time, even if it was, in fact, only manufactured to look like this the week before last. In the Fountain Garden Stone Water of the East, the emphasis is on antiquity.

Many of the more formal European styles like to use statues of lions, eagles and, of course, garden nymphs, cherubs, or famous people. Sometimes it’s a boy having a piddle. I’m sure most of us have seen these. They appear almost ad nauseum around our cities. However, in setting up your fountain, I suggest you look at our web pages:

Japanese Garden Fountain History, Fountain Garden Stone Water The stone water basin or fountain has a time honored place in Japanese gardens. It goes back into the mists of antiquity. Stone-basin fountains or "Chozubachi" originated in ancient shrines and temples. The idea was for worshipers to wash their hands and rinse their mouths before entering the shrine; an act of purifying both the mind and body.

The fountains created as "Chozubachi's", which were very large, usually 16" or taller in height. So-called “Tea-masters” later redesigned the fountain bowls for Japanese Tea Gardens to the height of 12" or even lesser height to create the "Tsukubai". The Tsukubai or “Crouching Bowl” was supposed to “humble guest and create the right state of mind” before the guests joined in with the Tea Ceremony. Today, many Japanese gardens have both Chozubachi and Tsukubai fountains, and these are fed with water from a bamboo spout or spouts called "Kakei". Setting up a Water Basin Fountain Below are listed a few examples of how to set up at Water Basin and Bamboo Fountain. In “the Land of the Rising Sun, most water basins are fed with fresh water through a bamboo fountain. The water flows over the basin and descends to a hidden reservoir that contains a pipe which drains the water away. This particular stone fountain basin is a "Chozubachi" because of its height. The beautiful “aged look” ambience is the result of water flowing from the bamboo spout.

In this enchanting scene, the "Tsukubai" or Crouching-basin fountain is set-up in a water reservoir using a traditional Japanese, Bamboo T-bar fountain. What is unique in this one is that the reservoir of water is can be viewed around the basin. It is not hidden, as most are. The water reservoir provides a beautiful reflection of the surrounding plants, along with with the riverbed with its colored pebbles. This Tsukubai would also attract birds and other wildlife.
