Lighted Water Fountains
Welcome to Lighted Water Fountains!
Fountains rate as one of the most attractive visual features that you can come across in a garden. The tranquility and instant relaxation that is produced by a fountain can have instant beneficial effects on our wellbeing. As discussed in other pages throughout this website, the water fountain should be situated in the landscape depending on the style, fashion, and the feeling that we are trying to produce. Lighted water fountains can fit into many styles of garden, whether that style be formal, informal, occidental or oriental - or your very own creation.
Above, why not light up your fairy fountain ?
I would like to start here with the placement of your fountain; a lighted water fountain that lights up to sooth and relax; to add that special something that is only created with a colour-lighted area. Water fountains are marvelous: lit up water fountains add that little bit extra. For now you have both sound and light.
Lighted Water Fountains are a feasible proposition for us all. We can create them in both outdoor and indoor landscaping - depending upon what areas we have available, of course. And as previously said, there is such a variety of styles available to us.
But there are certain aspects which need to be borne in mind. Firstly, do you want your lighted water fountain to stand out? Or would you prefer it blend into the garden, remaining relatively unobtrusive? Would you like it to be a major feature that can be viewed from almost any angle? Or would you prefer it be tucked away along a pathway somewhere, so that you can sort of ‘come upon it,’ linger a while, then pass on by?
Above an indoor fountain, lit up, moonlight blue!
We talked of indoors an outdoors. From the indoor aspect, would you like your lighted water fountain to so placed that you can view it from inside your home, perhaps through a living-room window? Or maybe, if you have a suitable foyer area; have it placed so that when people call at the front door they can appreciate it when you welcome them into your house?
Then we need to consider the plants which will complement the fountain. Also, whether or not we wish to place seating close by. Again, we must not forget the flooring around the fountains base – assuming this is the sort of water fountain we desire.
The size of our fountain is another consideration. Is it going to be so big that it will create an area of humidity in its immediate surrounds? Yes. Well, then we’ll need to consider ventilation. One way to remedy too much humid air could be to place it so that is usually subject to a gentle breeze. I did say gentle, not a gale. Just enough to keep the air containing an optimum amount of moisture and enough to discourage those dreaded mosquitoes. Oh, and when the fountain is turned off, to stop those dreaded Mozzies breeding, drop some Tea-tree or Eucalyptus oil onto the reservoir or pond surface. This will kill off any would-be larvae.
Next, with our lighted outdoor water fountain we come to the colour of our lighting. All sorts of colours and intensities can be used. We can strengthen or lighten with the number of artificial light sources we use, of course. It will depend upon the effect we are endeavouring to create or, more accurately, the mood we are trying to engender.

Using Feng Shui principles for a lighted water fountain, a soft blue light could be used to supply an almost ‘cosmic’ effect that is similar to moonlight. Why a soft blue? A pale blue would most nearly imitate natural moonlight. Still, do not restrict yourself to this colour only. You can change the ambience at any time. You might like, for example, to highlight the greenery by the use of a green light. Or a yellow. It is entirely up to you. It’s your lighted water fountain.
Solar-powered lighting is another option. And solar is a boon not only in that its use saves you money, solar- powered is also beneficial for our environment.
Light placement can alter the whole ambience. You have the option of lights being placed in other areas than in the pond, or on the fountain itself. You can put them up in a nearby tree, on a pole or house awning - anywhere you envisage they’ll cast the light you want. Solar, or direct from you outdoor power outlet, or both. It’s up to you.
Also, another possibility is the lights being set low and shining upwards . This style of light placement looks fantastic on large outdoor water fountains. Each light should actually have the beams criss-cross each other for an even stronger effect. Think of your lighted water fountain as a way of adding water to your garden - and now you’re adding another element -light.
If you can, place your fountain so it gets sunlight right throughout the day, and from all angles. This will help it stay in good condition. It will also help with that shimmering effect that is so often created from natural light. If your fountain is in a courtyard, a similar approach is needed using your artificial lights. This is achieved by placing your lighting indirectly, so that the light sources themselves cannot be seen, only the light itself.
Some fountains come in kit form with lights installed and it can be a simple matter of providing them with water and electricity – and, presto! They’re in operation!
To summarize: Lighted water fountains have a beneficial effect on our health and wellbeing, in that they create an aura of tranquility. Also, they look marvelous. With the installation of a lighted water fountain, the same principles apply as to that which is without lighting: optimal placement, both from the viewing and environmental aspects. Lighting placement, intensity, colour and any other effects is limited only by your imagination and a consideration of safety aspects.
